The Connexions Service was established by the Government in 2001 with the aim of providing a comprehensive service to meet young people’s needs for information, advice and support.

It provides high quality, impartial, information advice and guidance together with personal development opportunities to help remove barriers to learning and progression; enabling young people to make a smooth transition to adult and working life. The Service is designed to help all young people aged 13 to 19 regardless of need and those aged up to 24 with a learning difficulty or disability. However there is a particular focus on those at risk of not being in education, employment or training (NEET) or of being socially excluded.
BabcockEnterprise currently delivers the connexions services in Wakefield, East Sussex, West Sussex, Camden, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Lewisham. Activities provided include:
- Working in school. Generally this is Years 7-9, however we are also piloting work with Year 6 primary school pupils.
- Working with Parents/Guardians to help them to help their children.
- Helping young people use on-line guidance and information tools, such as Careers Etc. More> (opens in new window)
- Working with schools to identify those young people ‘at risk’ of becoming NEET.
- Running ‘Opportunity Fairs’ for young people and their parents/guardians.
- Helping young people apply for training and job opportunities.
- Providing consultancy to schools to support them achieve national quality standards in Careers Education and Guidance.
- Engaging with employers, training providers, schools and colleges to match young people to opportunities.
- Working with schools to ensure that every school leaver has an offer of education, employment or training.
